Courage, Vulnerability and Mascara

During a recent talk at a private school in ATX, we discussed some important concepts in an 8th grade girl’s life. Courage, Vulnerability and Mascara.  First of all, if you are a parent of a 8th grade girl then you know how much they are loving make up videos on youtube.com and also know there is nothing more vulnerable then showing your authentic self in middle school.  Middle school is all about fitting in and so you can belong.  At Austin/Houston Therapy for Girls, we have discussions around how actually fitting in is the biggest obstacle to belonging.  Whether you are 14 or 40, we build up armor in order to not show vulnerability ( as we like to call vulnerability armor)  because there is always a fear if we show or share our true feelings and thoughts that others will judge us.  The truth is that we could all tell many painful experiences and how we felt judged and started building our armor up piece by piece. As Brené Brown states in her recent Instagram post, “ it’s not fear that gets in the way of showing up-it’s armor. Armor suffocates courage and cages our hearts” click here for posts
On this Valentine’s Day, it’s ok to scared and still dance, sing or love with your full heart. And just for the record, the favorite mascara among the 8th grade girls is LASH Paradise by Loreal.
