Alma joins Austin Therapy for Girls as a seasoned clinician with over 20 plus years of experience in a variety of settings. Shayna and Alma met when they were both baby social workers at Austin Independent School District. Alma has been an Austinite for over 20 years and loves the city she lives and makes a great impact in this diverse community. Alma is fully bilingual in English and Spanish, so yes she can do therapy in Spanish, which is a great asset to Austin Therapy for Girls.
Alma received her undergraduate degree from Baylor University in Social Work and her Master’s degree from New York University in May 2000 and still teaches classes at St. Ed’s and UT as an adjunct professor. Alma has training in various modalities including Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, EMDR, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, while focusing on strengths, culturally sensitive practice, interpersonal connections, systems, and most importantly client-centered.
She also specializes in issues that impact marginalized communities, including minority girls and women. Alma loves being a “boy mom” to 3 boys all attending AISD dual language schools and of course her fur baby boston terrier ChaCha.
