Don’t Ghost Your Therapist This Summer

Your beach bag might be full, but your brain still needs unpacking.

Ah, summer. The season of sunburns, overpriced snow cones, and pretending that your kid’s boredom isn’t driving you completely bananas. Schedules are looser, the group chats are quieter, and you finally have time to breathe. So naturally, it might feel tempting to take a break from therapy too. But before you cancel that weekly session and run off into the sunset with nothing but flip-flops and denial—read this.

Here are five hilarious-but-true reasons to not ditch therapy just because it’s hot outside:

1. Less Stress = More Emotional Excavation Time

No school drop-offs. No looming deadlines. No “please bring 48 cupcakes tomorrow” emails. First of all—congrats on surviving Maycember (that fake month where time bends and everything is due).

Summer is the perfect time to dive into the deep end emotionally—you’ve been taking swim lessons all year. 🏊‍♀️ Now’s the moment to explore what’s really under the surface.

Like… why your mom’s “helpful suggestions” still make your jaw lock up. (Hi, inner child. Yes, we see you.)

Bonus: Therapist Orna from Couples Therapy would be so proud of you. She’s out here connecting childhood wounds like it’s a true crime series. Summer = ideal time to do your own investigative work.

2. Slow Your Roll… Don’t Slam the Brakes

Sure, life slows down in summer—but don’t slam on your mental health brakes like you’re avoiding a squirrel. Even if you scale back, staying somewhat connected in therapy helps you keep your progress, well, progressing. Think of it as the SPF of your emotional health: invisible, but very necessary.

3. Parenting a Tween or Teen?

If “I’m bored” had a frequent flyer program, your kid would be platinum. Instead of losing your mind—or hiding in the pantry with snacks—use the summer to work on communication and connection. Bonus: fewer emotional meltdowns while school is out.  Maybe weekly therapy isn’t in the cards right now—but that doesn’t mean you’re out of tools.

  1. Transitions Are Coming… Like a Freight Train

Starting middle school? High school? College? Young adulthood? Just remembering where your pants are after vacation? These transitions are stressful, even if everyone’s smiling in the Instagram post. Therapy can help ease the jump—and prevent the full-blown meltdown when August rolls around. (Hint: Check out our Grow Girl Summer Series or Courage Camp!)

5. You Don’t Have to Be in Crisis to Go to Therapy

Therapy isn’t just for sobbing in sweatpants with a box of tissues (although, we’ve all been there). Sometimes it’s about laughing, learning, and realizing that the way your barista spelled your name isn’t a personal attack. Therapy can be chill, insightful, and honestly… kind of a vibe.

So this summer, don’t break up with your therapist.

We’re not needy—we just know it works. Stay consistent, go deep, and show up for your brain the same way you show up for your sunscreen. Future You (and September You) will be eternally grateful.
