Austin Therapy for Girls specializes in individual, group and family therapy for girls and young women between the ages of 5 and 25. Due to our narrow focus on helping girls and young women, our therapists have specific skills and knowledge to facilitate growth and make meaningful change in your life. Because our services are individualized based on your needs, we require an assessment before entering into the therapeutic relationship. We do not accept insurances at this time, and we are self pay day of service. During the assessment, we develop goals based on meeting the you where you are. For clients under 13, we prefer to meet with parents/guardians first and come up with goals for both parents/guardians and child in two separate appointments.
The following is a specific description of our services and preferred treatment modalities.
Current research shows that girls’ self-esteem peaks when they are 9 years old. Due to this fact, we often see the beginning signs of anxiety and depression at an early age. Our goal with young girls is to teach both them and their parents/guardians tools to help deal with the struggles of being a young girl in the digital age. Fees for individual therapy range from $150-$175 an hour. All therapists at ATFG have over ten years post masters experience.
Treatment Modalities: Positive Discipline, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma Focused CBT Therapy, Shame Resilience (based on the work of Dr. Brené Brown), Dan Siegel “No Drama Discipline” and Mindfulness and Self-Compassion. EMDR ( shayna barksdale only)
Teens begin therapy for a variety of reasons. Since some teens are resistant to traditional therapy, we encourage teens to be a part of the treatment process and develop goals based on their current struggles. ATFG focuses on specific treatment for depression, anxiety, self-injury and generally feeling unworthy and inadequate. Developing healthy communication with parents/guardians is also a key to long-term effectiveness of therapy. Often parents/guardians will join the last 10 minutes of a session with the teen’s permission to review tools from the session. Group therapy is encouraged either during or after individual treatment as a way to develop a peer support system for the teen. For a list of current groups, check out our Groups page.
Treatment Modalities: CBT, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Shame Resilience (based on the work of Dr. Brené Brown), Motivational Interviewing, and Self-Compassion, EMDR Trained ( Shayna Barksdale, LCSW)
For Young Women
Young women often are in a transitional phase of life and needing some guidance in making the leap to adulthood. The approach used with young women is highly collaborative, in which the client decides on the goals and whether to involve of other influential figures in their lives in the treatment. One of the unique services at ATFG is an intensive weekend workshop based on the work of Dr. Brené Brown. To learn more about this 3 day intensive workshop check out our Daring Way™ page.
