Summer Must Reads for 2017

Summer is always a time to catch up on some good reading. We have gathered some newbies and some oldies for our “must reads for this summer!

1. The Angst of Adolescence
In her book, author, psychologist, and mother of teens Dr. Sara Villanueva discusses the challenges parents often face while raising adolescent children.  She states that her overall goal in writing the book is to help parents overcome the many obstacles they are met with when their children reach this difficult stage in life. Each chapter of the book covers a different aspect of adolescence like puberty, dating and relationships, family conflicts, etc. that many parents need advice on. Throughout these chapters, she reassures her readers that although she knows that what they are going through is both very frustrating and difficult, it will get better in the end.  Dr. Villanueva uses a light-hearted, conversational writing style while providing parents of a variety of ways to connect with their teens and relieve some of the daily pressures and conflicts that are especially prominent during the years of the “terrible teens”. Thanks to our summer intern for reading and writing this summary!
2. Strong is the New Pretty:
A picture book with 175 photos and stories of young women doing amazing things. We love the idea of redefining beauty as strength.  A great book to have in your living room or waitng room.
3. Beauty Sick
Renee Engeln, PhD, is an award-winning professor of psychology at Northwestern University. Her work has appeared in numerous academic journals and at academic conferences, and she speaks to groups across the country. This is one of our list to read this summer.
4/5: The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown and Self-Compassion by Dr. Kristen Neff
( prof at UT) are the conerstones of our practice at both our Houston and Austin offices. In fact, most of our groups are based on these two books and we create art projects based on the concepts and tools in these books.  We recommend these books for everyone 16 and up!

Too hot for you to read or just prefer online learning, here are two great courses offered by courageworks.org, the discount code for June is COURAGE.
